Lately I have been receiving a number of questions about hair and hair products - so it only made sense that I start a Q&A portion to my blog. I love being able to give advice and really put into practice what I have learned over the years :) So please, keep the questions coming!

Q: So I got the flat iron and the Heat Tamer Spray (TRESemme). What should I use after using the flat iron? TRESeeme has a curl locking styling spray (extra hold) should I be using it? my hair is very fine so its extremely difficult for the curls to last ( that's why I had to perm it a couple years ago). I really hope I can do it with a flat iron.

Thanks for your advice in advance!

A: First off, GREAT question because a lot of women who have fine hair struggle with volume and lasting curls. For those with fine hair - a flat iron will be your best friend because unlike traditional curling irons, they distribute heat more evenly throughout the hair and give you much fuller curls.

However, before you even think about using any sort of hot tool, it is important that you use a good shampoo that will clean your scalp well and add some volume then follow through with a light conditioner to moisturize the hair. If you are worried about the conditioner being too heavy, just work it mid-shaft down rather than from the roots.

Towel dry hair and prep your hair with a heat tamer/protector. When choosing styling products, use sprays over mousses or gels which just way down the hair. The general rule of thumb is to use the right amount of product for your hair type. If you have fine hair, a little goes a long way whereas if you have a thick mane, more is needed. Whatever type, be sure to use a wide tooth comb and distribute it evenly through. Blow Dry hair and make sure hair is fully dry. I recommend using a shine spray just before you flat iron. Spray onto hands and rub between palms and again work it mid-shaft down.

Alright, onto the fun stuff. When working with your flat iron, hotter isn't always better! With fine hair, you don't want to over heat because it will just damage it and make it even more frizzy. Start on the lowest temperature and work your way up if needed. Take small sections for more fullness (about 1 - 1 1/2 inches). Clamp the flat iron horizontally from the root, turn it about a 180 degree down and gently run the tool down the hair. The key is, the tighter you press your flat iron, the tighter your curls. If you want a more beachy look, same idea, clamp down and turn 180 degrees, however, rather than going straight down, angle your iron at 45 degrees and work through. Always remember you want to direct the curls away from your face (if you can) rather than inwards, which is more flattering.

Finish off by adding a little shine spray and a light coat of hair spray to set it.

Congrats Joanna & Stan - April 23, 2011!

Meeting Joanna was a total fluke! For those of you who don't know, Joanna is the genius and founder behind the ever popular Henkaa dresses, which seems to be the choice of dress for many of brides this season. I stumbled upon their Facebook page through a friend of all things lol. I originally contacted Joanna with hopes of having them sponsor their amazing dresses for the Onyx event I coordinated for the Odette Cancer Centre. Let`s just say it was the longest email EVER and not because I had a lot to say, rather I had no idea how to ask so they knew I was legit lol. My original plan was to just buy meters of fabric from Fabricland and draping it over the girls, but when I saw how versatile the Henkaa dresses were, I just knew it would complete the look. Once I hit the send button - I was pretty pessimistic, but the minute Joanna responded and graciously offered to help, I was in total shock and overjoyed. On a side note, this was the first time I met the groom before the bride because Joanna was in India, so Stan stepped in for her lol. He was such a nice and down to earth guy and I was so honored that he and their assistant Cindy attended to make sure the dresses were spot on!

Anyway, back to their wedding! Joanna mentioned in passing in one of our emails that she was getting married and was looking for a stylist, so of course I was all in for it. I actually didn`t hear back from her until April LOL, so when she asked if I were available, I was shocked AGAIN!

It was right around the time I was about to start teaching at Blo, so I asked Joanna to be a model and we can do her trial at the same time since we were short on time. I thought for sure she would say no because it wasn`t the most personal and she would be in front of strangers. However, she agreed to and that`s how we first met...3 weeks before her wedding :P Joanna and I had some fun conversations - I`m really not sure how she fit everything into her days. I can`t even tell you what an insane schedule she had :S Made me stressed for her! But she seemed quite composed. We decided on a second trial the week before her wedding just to make sure we tweeked the look so it was just right and then we were off to the races.

Saturday morning...what can I say...I was up at 3:15am to start the day. It was cold, windy and raining, really NOT the best weather to wake up to. Crystal and I made it to the hotel by 5:00am in Mississauga where the girls were still sleeping...let`s face it, any one of us would be too lol. I was extremely nervous because I really didn`t want to screw this up. Joanna and I have some mutual friends, some of which were previous brides, friends in the industry and upcoming brides...so I knew a lot of eyes would be on my work. Thank GOD everything worked out and her girls were happy! What a funny bunch they were. Laughter and tears...makes any day that much more special. I always knew that Jo was a caring person and even though her girls playfully teased her about being a push over, I am and was so appreciative that she agreed to be a part of Onyx and also for sharing this moment with me.

Joanna looked absolutely stunning in her Qi Pao (red Chinese dress) as she was doing the tea ceremony first. Though I did not get to see her in the actual wedding gown, I got a glimpse through Facebook lol and wow, just wow. The girls of course sported beautifully custom made pink Henkaa dresses!

To Joanna and Stan - I am so glad that we met and thank you for being so kind in your willingness to help me with my event. I was so happy to be a part of this and from I saw, it looked like everything turned out perfectly! You made it! lol. Hope you both get some time to just be together and finally take a well deserved and needed break. Wishing you all the best in your love as a married couple and continued success with Henkaa :) Looking forward to working with you both again!

What a perfect day it ended up being...the weather totally cleared up and the temperature sky rocketed up!

The Royal Coif

I think it's safe to say that all eyes will be on Kate Middleton tomorrow morning when she walks down the aisle at the West Minister Abbey. Speculation of what she will be wearing started the minute they announced their engagement and well, it's kind of ridiculous. I mean, it's taken a life of its own. This has been the biggest thing since Madonna kissed Britney at the MTV Music Awards or Tiger Wood's infidelity.

However, to chime in all the Royal Wedding frenzy - I got thinking, while her dress may be THE most important thing being photographed at tomorrow's nuptials, in my eyes, a bad coif can kill even the most stunning gown. So here are my predictions/picks for the soon-to-be Princess and her locks.

Option #1: Kickin' it Old School

I think there's this misconception that tight updo's and tiaras are old fashion, out of style and only meant to be worn with puffy shoulders and full length sleeves. Think the 80's and even early 90's - you'll see what I mean. Well - when you're being crowned a princess and entering the Royal family - I actually think it's the most appropriate look. It's meant to be cinematic and dramatic (bonus points to someone who can tell me what song that's from)...a real life movie where literally billions of people will be watching. Key for Kate to keep it modern and fresh - full pull back, volume on top and sleek on the sides...flat head = no good! I wouldn't suggest a full donut bun, but something with texture and visual interest, profile is key.

Move the back a little higher and you've got an ideal formal updo fit for royalty...the crown's gotta sit somewhere! Go big or go home!

Option #2: Sheer Romance

She's marrying a Prince for crying out loud - of course it's supposed to be romantic. If Kate decides not to go classic and sophisticated, option #2 proves to be the perfect coif for her mane. We are so used to seeing her with perfectly blown out hair - voluminous and bouncy. So if she's going for a more "natural" look, a halfie will do just that. With some added curl and some slight pinning, it will transform her from common girl to Princess Bride. She'll probably need to add some extensions for added volume and length to complete the look.

Option #3: An Element of Surprise

If it's a show they want, then it's a show she should give. Forget tradition and forget the romance - Kate should take the chance to show her true fashion sense with a trendy updo. Whether it's to the side or slightly messy - Kate has years to be reserved so this would be the ultimate statement. Think about it - it's a combination of everything...how can it be bad? lol. All in all - I don't know that I would suggest this if all she's going to get is backlash. However, she's still young and I think her hair should reflect that! Let's give them something to talk about...eh?

As long as they keep her face shape in mind - any modified version of the styles above can't go wrong. Whatever she decides will have the haters, so there's no way ONE style will satisfy the entire world watching. But one thing is for sure - Kate is an iconic image, the IT girl right now, so whatever ends up on her head tomorrow will bring on a whole new trend in world wedding hair.

Congrats Michelle - April 16th, 2011

Michelle may go down in my books as one of THE most calming bride ever. That may also be because she was super organized and had everything done wayyy in advanced, but nevertheless this made it so easy to work with her!

Talk about being organized - Michelle originally emailed me back on March 5, 2010.. she was clearly doing her homework more than a year in advanced and booking vendors lol. After a few brief, but pleasant emails, by March 10th - she was ready to book without even doing a trial!!!

"I've already seen your work on your website and Joee's, Im really confident in your work so we're ready to book with you for our hair up-do on my wedding!"

Crazy eh? lol. Good thing though because I did have 3 other brides inquire later on!

Agreeing to be a part of this wedding was like twisting a rubber arm. I heard that superstar Joee was shooting and that the ever beautiful Rhia was doing makeup....I mean, c'mon...it's a no brainer! These two just inspire me constantly with their talent and passion. It was awesome to also see long time friend and up n' coming photog, Andrew, second shoot :)

With 8 people in total needing their hair done, I was fortunate to have my bestie Crystal come and join me in getting everyone ready. It was like my ideal morning - peaceful and efficient lol. Michelle's family was incredibly sweet and that was just the cherry on top. Michelle had mentioned that she wanted to put her hair up in the evening, so I quickly gave a lesson to her mom, sister and JOEE. lol. This obviously proved to come in handy as it was a team effort :)

All in all - loved this wedding! There really is nothing I would have changed that morning because not only did I have the chance to work with someone who fully trusted me and my work - but I was surrounded by an incredible crew of genuine Friendors to work with. I'm sure from the sneak-peek-o-vision, you can see they rocked this wedding. And what a good looking couple!

Congrats Vivian - March 19, 2011!

Wow...wedding season has just begun and I am already 3 weddings behind lol. I really need to not make this a habit! With that said, I was so fortunate to have been a part of Vivian's wedding, who was referred to me by the very sweet Bea and Sonya.

Here's how it all went down. When I first met with Vivian for her trial, we hit it off right away. I realized just how important trials really are - not just to get the hair right, but because it really gives both the bride and I the chance to chat and get to know each other. I will admit that when I first started with this business, I already had a pre-conceived notion about what I could talk about with the bride, but as the years have past (man, I feel so old saying that lol) I have learned that you can't over think it and just go with the flow. Everything just comes so much more natural and you really do get to know someone on such a more meaningful level.

I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Vivian because she was so easy going and had a great sense of humor. For her big day, we opted for a very sophisticated yet trendy Leaning Tower of Pisa. Vivian rocked it! She looked absolutely stunning! Not to mention, Sonya did an amazing job with her makeup...it was the first time I got to see her in action and she was PRO :)

It was also nice that Vivian, Odelia (one of her bridesmaids/cousin) and I got to share a quiet moment in the morning and shared some laughs. Her girls actually wore the slate grey Henkaa dresses, the same ones I used for the ONYX event back in November! I think at least 5 of my brides this year have chosen these versatile, flirty and figure flattering dresses for their weddings. 2012 Brides....check them out...very worthwhile!

Vivian - all I can say is that it was such a pleasure being a part of your big day. Thank you for being such a wonderful person and keeping it so real. I hope you and Justin share a beautiful life together :)

Do I look Chinese? Yvette & Mike - March 5, 2011

So you're probably wondering why I titled this blog with such an unusual question. I mean, of course *I* look Chinese...but my ethnicity has nothing to do with it at all - in fact, it was Yvette's super sweet mom who asked this very innocent, yet slightly eyebrow raising question. Keep in mind, she's Sri Lankan. lol. With that said, here is the story of how I met the wonderful Yvette.

Yvette contacted me literally weeks before the wedding. Normally, bookings happen at least 4 months beforehand...and that's still considered "last minute". So when I got the email, I won't lie - I was hesitant to say yes because of my previous experiences. But when I did - I didn't get a reply for a few days and that made me even more uncomfortable considering time was ticking and we still needed to fit a trial in. Finally, I get the email and everything took off. The trial took place 2 days before the wedding LOL. Talk about working under pressure! What I will say is that from the moment I met Yvette, all fears were gone. She was/is a ball of sunshine and that really made a difference!!!

The more we talked, the more I felt I made the right choice. Her MOH, Char and mom were a riot! I loved every moment of our trial, hearing about Yvette's crazy ways lol.

On the morning of - everything just kinda fell into place, UNTIL....I realized I would be doing hair for the flower girl who was 2 years old! Last time I did hair for a child that young scarred me lol - there was yelling, screaming, tears, mom`s dirty look and my bright red face. THANKFULLY, she was my best 2 year old client ever (see her in Joee`s blog) . Yvette`s family was extremely hospitable and welcoming. It was double fun because I FINALLY got to see V again who did the girls makeup, as well as the always amazing J-WONG!

Back to the title of the blog - throughout the entire morning, it just seemed like everyone at some point said something that just made you go, "HUH?!" Vanessa was mistaken for Heidi (who was shooting the boys), I was called Jason at one point, bridesmaid dissing the mom (by `accident`), sister dissing sister and of course, mom asking if she looked Chinese after her transformation. So all in all, there was no shortage in laughter.

What this wedding all came down to was love. I could just see and hear it in Yvette`s voice, as well as everyone around her. She was stunning and beaming with happiness. Congrats to Yvette and Mike on your new life together - wishing you a lifetime of love and joy! I am honored to have been a part of your big day.

After a much needed break and rest from all things hair - I`m back and in full force! lol...well, not really - but I have always wanted to say that.

So what`s on the agenda for 2011? Besides the wedding season literally beginning this weekend - I'm in talks with a few others in the industry about coordinating a very unique wedding event for Fall 2011. All I can say is that we're definitely thinking outside-the-box.:) Also - I'm excited to announce that I will also be teaching an updo training/workshop at Blo for their employees in April! I feel a little uneasy considering it's my first time doing a workshop for such a large group, but I'm pumped about the challenge.

With that said, let's get right into the Mane Attraction for the week:

Now that the Oscars are over - brides everywhere will be googling photos and asking their stylist for a celeb worthy coif. This is what I call the Oscar Fever Frenzy. It's a trend I've noticed in the past 2 years whereby brides will have no idea how to describe what they want, they just say, "Did you see ____________ Oscar's hair?"

I'm going to take a risk and set a trend that I think is worth following for 2011. It's what I like to call, the "Bronco Pony." What makes this style work for your big day is its simplicity to detail giving off that effortless glamorous feel. This is definitely PHAT (Pretty Hot And Trendy). And who better to sport this then the very talented JENNIFER HUDSON, who sported this do at this years Academy Awards. Definitely a winner in my books.

Unlike the "Perfect Pony," which celebs such as Nicole Kidman, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce & Blake Lively who set this trend for brides and her maids everywhere - I am going to state right here, right now that the "Bronco Pony" is off to the races.

This year proved to be the longest season I have had since I started 5 years ago. It has also been one of the most rewarding and memorable because of the amazing people I have met along the way. In December, I only had one wedding and it was the perfect way to end the season.

Tracy Liu`s Wedding - December 4, 2010:

When I first met Tracy, I had a few hesitations lol. She seemed to have it together - and her confidence was overwhelming. Boy, was I wrong. She was nothing but sweet and super down-to-earth. Having been a referral from Marilyn, I knew that I had to up the anty and give her exactly what she was looking for. The inspiration: Jessica Alba I don't know what it was about this year, but my brides took risks...and I LOVED it. It's fun to bust out styles that are out of the norm. So, a piece of advice to all 2011 brides....HAVE FUN, take RISKS and dont be afraid to go BIG :)

On the week of Tracy's wedding, my grandma passed away and although we were anticipating it, we just didn't know it was going to happen so quickly. I was torn because I wanted to fly to Boston to be with my mom and if the funeral was on the Saturday, there was no way I was going to make it in time - but thankfully, by the grace of God - the service was on Sunday, and I was able to be with my mom during this difficult time. While I didn't want to email Tracy - I had a booked a flight on the day of her wedding and just wanted to give her a heads up to see if we could possibly start a half hour earlier. Thankfully, she was more concerned about me rather than the time and she had no issue with it at all.

I should mention that Tracy had 9 bridesmaids, herself and her mom who all needed their hair done lol. We had 5 hours and thanks to my wonderful ex-bloer turned great friend, Kelly who came to assist me, everyone left with a smile. THANKS A MILLION KEL, I owe you BIG TIME!!!! p.s. brides, she is an amazing makeup artist if you're looking!

Because Tracy's immediate family and some BM's knew, a lot of them shared with me their well wishes and genuinely showed their concern. I don't know about you - but during a time like that, on someone else's most significant day, it meant the world to me. It really eased the pressure, but also just gave me a sense of hope and comfort. Tracy kept checking in, making sure I was good for time.

We even managed to squeeze in a picture in before we left :)

Tracy - my deepest thanks to you, your bridal party and mom - who were all an absolute joy to work with. I was so lucky to have ended my season with such a caring and genuine bride. I greatly appreciated all the kind words and encouragement that you showed during that difficult time and could not have asked for a more perfect way to close 2010. I wish you a lifetime of joy and happiness!!!

Although I did not get a chance to take any pics - Tracy sent this to me a few days after her wedding...and WOW, she looked amazing.

Kim Wilson's Wedding - November 6th, 2010:

November was a calm month, with only two weddinsg, one of which I was only assisting Ivy Lam (my HERO!), it was relaxing! Simply put, I love Kim. We met at the Maggie Sottero Fashion Show, where I did the hair and she was one of the models, who just so happens to be Cindy's (wonderful makeup artist!!!) cousin. Of all the models, I can honestly say, she was the only one I really got along with. Man, some of these "models" are such ...well, you know.

In any case, when we initially discussed trials, Kim immediately mentioned that her entire bridal posse (minus one) wanted a trial as well. In most cases, this makes me nervous because they are either VERY picky...or VERY indecisive. Well, I was wrong. Yes, they wanted to get the right looks, but none of them were crazy! lol. PHEW.

For Kim's first trial - we gave her a sleek, halfie...which didn't sit too well with the fiance :S That's a problem. So when she came back, she brought Nikki back, her future sister-in-law, who also wanted a second trial. Ok, at this point I'm thinking, "WOW, I suck." Having said that, we rocked a much more modern updo (click HERE), inspired by Heidi Klum for Kim and a Tower of Pisa (side pony) for Nikki. Nikki was like a comedy act all on her own!!!! She was awesome and made the entire experience, including the day of, a lot of fun.

Kim was planning on some door games, so of course, we started a bit earlier so she would be on time! It was pretty relaxing for the first portion of the morning. I loved her family, they were so, for a lack of a better word, cute lol. But as the bridesmaids trailed in one-by-one, it started to get a bit crazy. From locked doors to a multitude of people coming through - things were a bit tense towards the end. Kim definitely maintained her composure even though there were moments I could just feel the anxiety from her. But man, did she ever look awesome.

Kim was an ideal bride - because she spoke her mind, opted for a more visually interesting style and had a super sweet personality. Kim - thank you for everything! You were amazing to work with :)

Yvonne and Dave's Wedding - October 16, 2010:

October was a great month for weddings and Yvonne's was no exception! I have known Yvonne for about 6 years now having done her hair for Deb & Clayton's (her brother) wedding. She is the go-to person for all things cake. With no real formal training, this girl has got some crazy talent and an eye for detail - it's no wonder she made her own wedding cake!!! <-- scroll down and you will see what I mean!

Yvonne had a spectacular Chinese and Indian wedding. During the preliminary stages, there were a lot of unknown details when it came to the hair, but Yvonne would update me as soon as she knew the answer. During our trial, we got a chance to catch up, but also hear some of the "interesting" cultural things she had/have to go through before and during the wedding. Sharing a few laughs, I was happy we were able to reconnect this way.

With the Indian culture, there are few more things to consider when it comes to having appropriate hair and having done a few before, this was no different. The veil for the Indian Ceremony is HEAVY - so obviously the style had to hold up. But because they were also having a Western reception, we had to consider how to make a smooth change into her evening style later that day.

The morning started off earrrrrllllyyyy!! lol. To start things off, I went to the wrong hotel! But once I arrived, we just went at it till the sun came up. Yvonne is a calm person to begin with and just kind of goes with the flow for the most part. So when it came to doing her hair, she just let me do my thing. I don't really remember feeling much pressure - but that's because among her mom and bridesmaid, it kept things fun and interesting! All I can say was that the transformation was beautiful....Yvonne looked like an Indian princess after all that had been said and done!

I left to head back to the hotel for Yvonne's second style, but of course, traffic had another plan. Thankfully Yvonne was calm and totally understood, all the while I was freaking out inside!! Finally I made it...frantic, but had to be ready. As I started doing her hair...I had an audience...her aunts lol. Normally, that bothers me...just because it makes me really nervous - but they were saying nice things...sooooo, if anything, that actually helped lol. Finally I put in her awesome feather headpiece...and it just all came togegther. Yvonne's entire get-up was breath taking and I love that she chose an uncommon updo for her reception.

All-in-all - it was a fantastic day. Yvonne - you were such a fun bride to work with! Thank you for remaining so calm throughout the day and for being, well, simply you. Until the next cake order! lol.

Vivian Ip's Wedding - October 9, 2010:

Vivian was a referral from a bride I had back in 2008 - Christina Cheung, who was my all-time most simple bride, which I loved lol. As we got to know each other through email, I could already tell that Vivian was going to be a great bride to work with - she was very easy going and on top of things.

She had some concerns about her hair being too fine, so she decided to bring a full clip on set of extentions...I'm not talking about the ones with tracks that you can layer, it was a cap with hair on it that goes over your entire head. So as I started to place it onto her head...we just looked at each other and laughed because it just seemed so .... over-the-top, so I decided to put it aside and show her what I could do with her own hair and if she still thought it wasn't full enough, we would work with the extentions. Luckily, she was happy and we didn't have to go that route...PHEW!

I also got a chance to meet her mom Veronica prior to the wedding for a trial. With mom's, I never know what to expect and it always makes me a tad nervous - but thankfully, she was super easy going and extremely nice - she just wanted a style to make her look younger!

We started VERY early on the day of (still pitch dard outside) as they were going to play the traditional Chinese door games. I won't lie, I was totally still half asleep lol, I don't know why I was so tired. As the morning started to look like morning with the sun rising, I saw Vivian in a totally different light. And at one point, we were just laughing and excited and I'm not even sure why. Talk about a small world - as I was putting on the final touches on Vivian's hair, I see a familiar face walk by the door and before I could even say anything....Maggie (one of Bea's bridesmaids) backs up, we looked at each other and the hugging began! lol. I always tell brides the story about me and Maggie because it was so funny. The story goes that I think at one point we were both high on hairspray during Bea's wedding...and couldn't stop laughing!!

It was a great wedding full of laughter, discussion about the Cat Lady and her plastic surgery...plus a blast from the past = one fun morning! Thanks for all the hospitality :) Congrats Vivian!!

Diana Wong's Wedding - October 9, 2010:

It was a double whamy wedding, so right after I finished Vivian's, I quickly rushed over to Diana's house to help her get ready for her big day! It was just her, so it definitely took some of the pressure off :) Fun times getting her ready!!

I won't lie - it was a little hard to read Diana at first, not as a person, but with her hair lol. We had come up with some ideas about doing a loose updo, but I wasn't totally sure if it was going to work, not because it didn't look good, but there are different factors to consider when doing that kind of look. Diana emailed me shortly after our trial and decided perhaps structure would be better and I couldn't have agreed more.

Diana is a petite bride, but a bundle of energy. I just remembered that during both the trial and on the day of, the conversation never stopped and I love that because it doesn't make it feel like I'm actually doing work and thats ususally when I come up with my best work :)

I should mention that Diana was a referral from the always lovely Rhia, who was her makeup artist and always a pleasure to work with. Diana - I thoroughly enjoyed working with you because you were such a positive and down-to-earth bride. You looked absolutely amazing and I am so lucky to have been a part of your big day!! Stupid me didn't take any photos even though I thought I did...so below are a few I took from her photographers (hope you don't mind!!) from Joseph & Jaime Weddings who did a spectacular job capturing the day :)

Jaime's Wedding - October 2, 2010:

Jaime & I met through a friend who attends T3C and I'm so glad we did because she was just so easy to work with!

The day started pretty early at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel & Suites, and while it was quiet, I could just tell she was excited even with some minor anxiety with some, um...last minute changes lol. However, she didn't let that get to her and she and her entire bridal party pulled it together for a very enjoyable morning!

I will forever remember Jaime because she and her sister so generously donated to DREAMS after I sent an email out asking for support with our building fund. It is such an amazing feeling to have a bride and someone who I virtually didn't know at the time donate and do it so willingly. Needless to say, I am/was touched.

Jaime - I was honored to have been a part of your wedding. You were such a great bride and supportive friend. Thank you for everything!!!

So I have been under the weather for almost a month now and am just getting over it. I'm not sure whether it was a sign or whatnot, but I haven't been this sick in a VERY long time and it hit me hard! In any case, I was out of commission - so thank God I didn't have anymore weddings! But now that I'm feeling better, let's reach my goal and finish all these weddings before 2011!

Patricia & Greg's Wedding - October 1, 2010:

What can I say? There is no doubt in my mind that this was one of my top 5 weddings of the season hands down. Why? Because it was everything a wedding should have been. When I first met Patricia, she had already had a trial with another stylist so there was some added pressure as I wanted to live up to any expectations that there may have been. Not to mention, she was a referral from Joee, who was also her photographer and well, need I say more? lol.

What I loved about working with Patricia was her genuine personality. I just felt like there weren't any hesitations to share or barriers keeping us from getting to know each other. I get that I won't always have that with every bride, so I cherish it when I do!

So one would think that after living somewhere for 20 some odd years, they would know the area pretty well - BUT in my case I had no idea there was such a beautiful and quaint venue just down from where I lived. Patricia & Greg's wedding took place at The Miller Lash House, which is literally 5 minutes driving from where I live, right behids U of T...the things you learn. Love close weddings lol. When I arrived, I was welcomed by the entire Ocampo family - which really made the entire experience 10 times more memorable. There was calmness and laughter - two very therapeutic things to have at any wedding.

Everything from the dress to her choice of a non-bouquet - this wedding was original and simple and I loved it all. It was also very nice to have finally met the very talented Heidi Lau & Chris Luk after seeing and hearing so much about them!!!! What an amazing team :)

Patricia - I am so glad we met, you are such an amazing person....thank you for the very thoughtful card and look forward to hanging out with you soon :)

September Weddings!!

September was a relatively slow month, which at that time was a good thing especially since it gave me a little time to recover from the Summer lol.

In any case, this was a special month - two weddings, both amazing for two completely different reasons. Both on my top 5 weddings of 2010 :)

September 12, 2010 - Charissa & Dan:

Charissa and I met just after Marilyn's wedding back in July, which she helped and attended. With just a few months till her big day, we quickly set a date for a trial and got things rolling. Charissa was a very dynamic bride who had a very specific vision for her wedding and the look she was trying to achieve. They were planning a film-of-the-eras type theme as Dan is an actor and both had a passion for creating a unqiue visual for their guests. I will admit I was a bit worried that I was not going to be able to do it, which was further triggered when Dan wasn't a fan of her first style.

Step in, Marilyn, who came to our second trial! Double pressure LOL. But it all worked out and we settled on a very romantic and modern updo for this stunning bride-to-be :)

On the day of, things started off rough...and that is sugar coating it. I had been stopped by a cop to start things off making me about 40 minutes late to the original start time. As I saw Charissa's number show up on my phone, my blood pressure shot through the roof as I "tried" to remain cool about it. While she showed genuine concern on the phone, I felt terrible. Thankfully Charissa was kind enough to help cover parking at the hotel DT (which we all know can be a hassel doing)...HOWEVER as I was backing in...smashed into the overhead half wall. My trunk was done.

Curse words everywhere! lol. I arrived frazzled to say the least - but rather than turning into a Bridezilla - Charissa, the amazing person she is, embraced me with a hug - offered me food and drinks and told me just to relax. Between her calmness and awesome bridal posse - things went off without a hitch! Everyone was just so plesant and unique and I was/am so thankful that they were so cool to work with in spite of what could have possibly been a memorable day for all tbe wrong reasons. Special shout-out to Rita, one of her bridesmaids, who really put me at ease with our in depth conversation lol.

At the end of it all, Charissa was transformed into a beautiful & whimsical bride with her fairytale- like dress and hair. It totally went with their stylish, sleek & fashionable wedding!! I managed to snatch a quick photo on my BB of her while she was in her chinese dress (which was hot and nontraditional) and the other images are from her photographer (renaissance studios) who documented everything great!!

Charissa - THANK YOU for everything!!!!! I loved working with you and the vision you had...wishing you all the good things life has to offer. Let me know if when you start your event planning company :)

5 Months Later...

Can anyone explain to me why it's December and I'm still working on my August weddings?!! lol. Well - in an attempt to salvage what's left of my dignity from the embarassment of my tardiness, I'm going to do all the August weddings in one shot!

August 2, 2010 - William & Tiara:

I have known William and his family for quite some time (at least 15 years, they live just down the street from me), so it was such a nice way to reconnect and catch up on ...well, life. They also booked my mom for flowers so it became quite the family affair. W & T actually got married in Vancouver and they had two receptions, one on the West Coast and one here in the TO. They are such a nice couple and easy going - so there was no real pressure...PLUS it was super awesome Tiara came to my place and the start time was 3:00pm!!! (note: it was Tiff and David's wedding the night before.) At the end of it all, I really enjoyed working with these two and I only wish you all the happiness in the world :)

August 7, 2010 - Vinci & Issac:

This was a VERY special wedding. I met Vinci through Issac, her husband, who is the cousin of a very good friend of mine, Allen. Back in the beginning of spring, I received a phone call from Vinci who told me she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a form of Cancer. We worked with a wig and gave her two beautiful styles for the ceremony and reception. On the day of - Vinci's energy was high and she was just glowing. I got to work with the always-amazing Rhia Amio and met GeeHae (the photographer) for the first time who captured their day beautifully :) I am so thankful that Vinci finished her last treatment in September and grateful to have been a part of a wedding that was so inspirational. YOU GUYS ROCKED!! May God continue to bless you with good health and many more years of joyful memories :)

August 8, 2010 - Jennifer & John:

Jennifer was the kind of bride who was open to trying something new and that's what I loved about working with her. She was so down to earth and easygoing - love these kinds of brides!! The wedding took place at the Graydon Hall, which was my first time and let me just say that it was a breathtaking venue. It had such a nice vintage and regal feel...which went really well with Jen's overall look. We gave Jennifer a simple and soft Tower of Pisa and completed the look with a vintage feel broche. She and I shared a really funny moment..which will remain on the DL...but it definitely completed that wedding and I am so glad she has the same send of humour :) LOL. I will say this - it was the first time I was speechless...and apparently my face said it all :P Jen - thank you for all the kind words and for continuing to support me through your recommendations. You were a fantastic bride!!!

August 21, 2010 - Kamla's Wedding:

Kamla & I met through a contest coordinated by the talented Christine Ho and Tracey Mori of Well of Change. She had won free hair, makeup and photography - and it just so happened that she was getting married! For this day, Kelly & I worked our magic to give this SUPER sweet bride the perfect look. I just remeber at one point, her entire family was watching us work..which normally makes me very antsy...but because they were all so nice and just chatting up a storm, it didn't bother me at all. Kamla is mixed jamaican (I think?!) and asian - so they gave us rum cake before we left :) All in all, Kamla - You looked stunning and a pleasure to work with! I hope you had a wonderful day because you totally deserved it. Stupid me - this was the beginning of my, "I wish I took a photo" moment. lol.

August 28th, 2010 - Lily's Wedding:

While I generally don't like working in small areas (i.e. hotel rooms) because it always gets super crazy towards the end, this was an exception. That's because Lily had booked the President's suite and it was HUGE....I'm talking hair and makeup were on opposite ends of the place lol. The washroom alone where I was had two separate rooms...it was insane...but so awesome hahah. Lily...what can I say? It was a really relaxing morning with a lot of story telling about her and her fiance and I loved it. I may have only been her stylist...but she made me feel so welcomed and showed her appreciation. What was really cool was the fact she was the kind of person who said so much without having to really say anything...and that says alot about that person. It was a great morning with a great bride who looked...GREAT! :) On a side note, Lily has a lot of hair and it was thick. While I don't remember the exact story, she told me a stylist once gave her a not-so-nice style and that they couldn't put it up because there was too much to work with...psssh...

August 28th/29th, 2010 - Christina & Gable's Wedding:

I have known C & G for a VERY long time...all my life actually. So needless to say, I was so happy when they told me they were getting married! The two of them are one of the nicest couples I know...seriously. It was their priority that their friends would be able to enjoy their wedding so if they could outsource non-friends to do stuff, they did and I thought that was really awesome of them. I gotta say, they had some really fun and unique elements at the reception which I loved, including a midnight buffet of (from what I can remember) fries and mac n' cheese and a few other tasty items. They had two receptions, one for all their friends (at the Distillery) and the other for their parents friends (Chinese Banquet Hall). I was actually able to eat and dance at their reception, which was new, but nice lol. And it was equally nice to have had the chance to do Christina's hair for their Sunday reception. For the wedding day, Christina opted for a softer side do, so for her second reception she wanted a more structured and piecy style. Best part was...there was no trial, so she found a pic she liked and we went with it lol.

You two have always been so supportive through everything I've done and I can't say thank you enough! Top 5 wedding of the season! Here's to many more years of our friendship!

Puzzle Creations: A New Beginning

While I have been totally swamped with work with my regular 9-5 and hair stuff - I HAD to quickly take the time to blog about something very special!!

As many of you know, this past August I worked with a bride who was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer. This broke my heart as I received the call while at our BIG GIVE 2009 Reunion. I just remembered my heart dropped and I was in total shock. Thankfully, she finished her last treatment a few weeks ago and is recovering well!

As this all happened, it really inspired me that in spite of everything going on around me - I really needed to stop and cherish what a blessing God has given me to have a job where I can celebrate and be a part of someone's new beginning. I have been fortunate enough to have been inspired one way or another by each of my brides. With every wedding, I learn something new.

With that said, after 5 years of doing all this - I decided it was time to launch Puzzle Creations officially with its new look and vision. The event is taking place on November 21st, 2010 and while it's a showcase, it's also my way of saying THANK YOU to everyone who has been such a integral part of all this and what has transpired because of your support.

It's kind of crazy to think that in less than 72 hours, I will be prepping for the Maggie Sottero Fall 2010 Fashion Show. I'm not totally sure what to expect considering this will be the first show I do without any assistance and well, I'm freaking out. Don't get me wrong, I am excited and I know this will be an amazing opportunity - but it's the fear that if something goes wrong, there's no one else to point the finger at lol. In any case, I feel really blessed to have reached this point - and definitely looking forward to the result. Photos and commentary to follow shortly!

Congrats Layla & Erin! 07.24.2010 & 07.31.2010

This was a first for me - but I was approached by Erin months and months ago about doing her hair for her wedding only to have an email sent to me not too shortly after from Layla asking me the same question. So why is that weird? Well, here's the kicker - Layla & Erin are NOW sister-in-laws: Erin married Layla's brother...and if you read the heading, you read it correctly, their weddings were one week apart. INSANITY. The good thing was the family relatives who came for Layla's wedding only had to stay another week for her brothers lol.

So let's begin this family affair:

Layla was a breath of fresh air - even though I was *cough* "late" for our trial, she was the sweetest person. While the day of her wedding proved to be one of the most humid days, I could see it on her face that nothing else mattered except for the fact she was getting married to a man she truly loved. Every now and then, she'd just giggle with excitment and that to me is what a wedding should be about. Of course Erin was there who unfortunately was the last to go that morning, so we had to quicly put it up! What made this day even more memorable was Layla's grandma who told me I had "magic hands" lol. She was awesome!! Layla was a bride who deserved nothing but happiness - with a few scares along the way to this day - her determination, positive spirit and unbreakable faith in God, it was truly a day to celebrate!

Layla - thank you for reminding me that faith can do wonders. You were/are awesome!! Thank you so much for the card with all the kind words :) Hopefully we will run into each other at some point!!!! May God continue to bless you everyday.

Erin! What I will definitely remember was the night she came for her trial with mom and sister. Her mom, a very lovely lady, said something along the lines of, "you have ONE wedding that day" as I told her about my triple threat wedding day back in June. Erin, like Layla, was a very friendly bride. There wasn't any holding back with her, which I loved because whether it was the hair or things happening with the wedding, she told it like it was. On the morning of, unfortunately the door opened to a very sick bride. Erin was pale and felt nautious and I couldn't help but feel bad for her as I was doing everyone's else hair. All she could do was lie down on her lounger, drink and try to eat, praying to get better. This also meant we pushed her down to almost the last person (AGAIN) to get ready :( Luckily, everything worked out smoothly and she felt better as she walked out that door. Mom, of course, sweet as pie whispered to me, "you did it." :)

Erin - you were a spunky and beautiful bride. You looked stunning in your dress and I hope the rest of the day turned out to be exactly what you hope and wanted. Thank you for being such a great bride to work with!

Marilyn was my 17th wedding of the year who ironically was married on the 17th of July - there was definitely something very lucky about that.

All I can say is, from the minute Marilyn stepped into my little basement studio - we clicked. It was such a refreshing trial because there were no hesitations among either of us to talk constuctively when it came down to what she was looking for. We were definitely on the same page and thank goodness for that...BECAUSE, while Marilyn was such a lovely person - she procrastinated a lot to the point where I asked Vanessa (who referred me to her) whether she still needed my services LOL. With just two weeks before her wedding, we nailed a looked for her that was both sophisticated and modern.

On the day of - everything was peachy...quiet...almost too quiet. Vanessa had already arrived and set up and we quickly chatted before starting. I love working with V! (Thanks Joee for the hook up!) Her bridal posse was hiliarious and easy to work with. Slowly, time crept up on us and before we knew it...people were running up and down the stairs, yelling (nicely) across rooms, and packing things up quickly. The essence of a wedding had arrived!

I could see that Marilyn was tense - but I talked her through it and she remained composed. By the end of it, she gave me a huge hug as the final bobby pins were placed and last minute hairspray was sprayed. Marilyn looked like a movie star...simply beautiful. Speaking of movie star...here's a funny story - she originally had a picture of country star Faith Hill in her wallet which she kept to show her eyebrow lady the shape she wanted. Somewhere, somehow, after discussing what she wanted for hair...we looked at that picture again and...and BAM...it was the 'do! * see you below the inspiration.

Marilyn - you were a fun, quirky, and elegant bride! A true celebrity bride :) I absolutely loved working with you and your posse...may you embark on a new life together with your husband with love everyday!

Congrats June! 07.16.2010

June's wedding was NOT in June - too bad! lol...yes, that was random.

Anyway, June was nothing but a sweet bride. She was the kind of bride who sat quietly enjoying every moment of her big day. June was referred to me through a good friend of mine, Dorcas - whose brother was the groom. I also did D's sister's hair a few years back (Hi Lydia!!) who is now a brand new mother :) It was nice because I also got a chance to work with Merry!!!

What I enjoyed most about this wedding was just the fact you could feel the excitment in the room - a genuine feeling of joy and anticipation of getting married. I absolutely appreciated June for being such a caring bride because while people were supposed to be catering to her, she went around catering everyone else. I will say this though, it was an intense last few minutes as I fell behind in time. By the end of it all, Merry looked at me with a smirk on her face and shockingly said, "I've never seen you like this." (Bear in mind I had a heat/allergy rash all over me and I was dripping sweat.) My response to Merry, "me neither, me neither!" lol.

It was so crazy I didn't even get a chance to take a pic of June's hair...so I did the next best thing instead, I facebook stalked a bit and stole the before and after photos below. June, you looked awesome and so happy :) Congrats on getting married!!

This may have very well been the 10th time I've been to the Hilton this year at Warden & Hwy 7, and while the hotel doesn't change - each wedding party definitely does. Flora's day started pretty early and like most brides, she hardly got any sleep. The bridal party came prepared with bags of Timmie's and McDonalds, so at least they weren't going to starve! lol.

With the Glee CD playing in the background and an in depth conversation about what episode each song was from - the morning went off without a hitch! It was also the very first time I worked with Rhia Amio, a very talented makeup artist who will also be doing Vinci's wedding in...2 weeks!!!

What I loved about working on this wedding was the fact Flora wanted a much different style than most brides, opting for a Katherine Heigel Old Hollywood look. She even topped it off with a very unique french veil headpiece.

Congrats Flora! Thank you for letting me be a part of your special day! You looked amazing!!

What can I say about Lisa? Besides being a softspoken, good hearted bride - she's also an avid reader of my blog which is why I'm sending her a special shout out on here!!

On the morning of Lisa's wedding, the clouds were grey yet when I arrived at the house to set up, there was nothing but a smile on her face. So perhaps it wasn't the most ideal weather for a wedding, however, it didn't stop her and her entire bridal entourage from laughing and having fun. With a party of 10, it was an intense 6 hours, but Vanessa (who I see almost every week now lol) and I made good time and everyone looked amazing.

In all my years of being in the industry, I can honestly say this is by far the most calming wedding season yet. Zero Bridezillas and just a handful of Maidzillas - woo hoo! Lisa reminded me that I love what I do even though there are times I wish I were in bed haha.

Lisa - congrats on getting married! You were such an awesome bride to work with and I wish you a lifetime of happiness and joyful moments!

*On a side note, V and I had a trial with Cecile (who is getting married in August) later that day - so we grabbed a quick lunch at Wendy's where we literally ate our faces off. After the trial, it was nice as we just hung out, shared some laughs and did some much needed shopping at Shoppers LOL...all I have to say is that V and I took our friendship to the next level.

This past weekend was Annie's wedding, which felt more like a a little reunion because I knew both the bridesmaids - Winnie & Karen! Winnie went to McMaster University and we were both a part of CCF, while I did hair for Karen's bridal party (I want to say 3 years ago) - so it was nice to bump into both of them! Plus, the photographer ended up being Cliff Spicer (who photgraphed my close friend's wedding - Victor and Shannon). Funny enough, he remembered me!

I also got the chance to work with the wonderful Merry Carlos-Baguio, so all was good! Annie was a super chillaxed bride even though she hardly got any sleep. I think she put me more at ease lol. In any case, she, along with her girls and family were such a pleasure to work with and she looked stunning in a very simple, yet detailed wedding dress.

I am excited to announce that I will have the honor of being a part of The Big Give again this year, along with some of the most talented people in the wedding industry - hosted by the very cool Joee Wong. I finally had a chance to sit down last night to send Heather & Andrew an email to tell them the good news and the response I got back was mind blowing. There were CAPITALIZED words everywhere, !!!!!'s like you wouldn't believe and just an overall sense of genuine happiness. I LOVE IT! Honestly, it's such a humbling feeling to know that something that I often take for granted is able to get that kind of reaction from someone. Heather & Andrew - thank you for letting me be a part of your big day!

There's nothing that I can really say except how happy I am with the arrival of my niece. It's been a long time since I lost myself in a moment of sheer joy - but when I picked up Taryn for the first time, something was different. I was reminded again just how amazing God truly is and what a blessing life is. And while there is so much going on in my life at this very moment, all it took for me to bring me back down from the chaos was a 6lb 15oz baby. PTL for such a precious life :) I'm an uncle again!

In other news - congrats go out to Veronica for getting married this past Saturday! Despite the rain, her spirits were high as the rain actually reminded her of the night her then fiance proposed. Veronica looked beautiful! While I only did the bridesmaids, it was a bonus to see and work with both Merry (who did makeup and hair for Vee) & Vanessa, who I actually ended up doing her hair for lol. C'mon ppl, the rain took a toll on her hair - I wasn't gonna just let that be! lol.

While we all know how that saying goes, I definitely put it to the test this past weekend. Never in my entire wedding experience have I ever booked 3 weddings in one day - and while there were moments were I just wanted to drop to my knees from exhaustion, I never let that light at the end of the tunnel fade. It was one of those surreal days where you keep telling yourself that you can't believe it's really happening. SPECIAL THANKS TO MISS O for saving my life that day and Vanessa, who is always a pleasure to work with! See you Sat V lol.

3 weddings, 3 amazing brides - here is the breakdown (it's gonna be a long one!):

1 - Jenny Woo: all I can really say about Jenny is that she was ultra sweet. She opted for a chic Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is uncommon for brides - but this is what made her tres cool. She wasn't an ordinary bride - she liked taking risks and making subtle, yet impactful choices. She, along with her bridesmaids and super cute niece were a great bunch to work with and what made it even special was the letter she gave me afterwards:

"Just a quick note to say thank you for my beautiful wedding hair!

You've been so fun to work with my entire wedding planning process...

You've made me feel beautiful on my special day - thank you so much!"

Seriously, that alone made it all worthwhile - when someone shows that sort of sincerity, it trumps all. While it did get a bit chaotic towards the end, I was sad I was unable to see her fully done as she was in the makeup chair when I left - but from the photos I saw, she was stunning. Shout to Jenny and her awesome posse - you guys looked amazing :)

2 - Marianne Dimain: So this was a HUGE deal for me and while some of you may not recognize the name right off the bat, she is a news reporter for Global TV (previously City). Thanks to PHIL PANG for thinking of me!! I'm not even sure where to start - just that she may very well one of the nicest brides I have ever met. From our first trial, she offered an extremely kind gesture just for doing a practice run of her hair. It's unusual, but such a great encouragement! While there are many people who are totally different on and off camera, Marianne remained real and down-to-earth through it all. Her laughter was contagious and we had a blast just talking and getting to know each other better. Don't get me wrong, I was nervous for both her trials and a huge mess on the day of. I was running late (hahah, don't ask why) and had only a short period of time to finish her look. I felt absolutely horrible - and while it was an intense hour, she had a smile through it all and was kind enough to take a quick photo with me and Miss O before she left. She definitely had the bridal glow. She chose a smooth Statue of Liberty with soft waves.

3 - Diane Quan: Last, but definitely not least in my wedding extravaganza was the awesome Diane. This was a special wedding to me because Diane is an older bride (though really, you would never know - Miss O & I were shocked to hear her real age) and enjoys the simple things in life. She didn't want anything over the top - just a day to celebrate her love with her new husband. It was so quiet and calm that the only noise was the sound of laughter. She was a referral from Vanessa, who was there doing makeup - which of course is always fun. Diane and her entire family were extremely sweet people and I could tell, Miss O, V and I really felt true happiness. Diane was so kind as to invite us to her ceremony and cocktail hour!! Keep in mind, we were underdressed (which she said was no issue of course) and we just worked 11 hours, so we had to kindly decline. I can honestly say that I will always remember Diane because of her high spirit and good heart. :) Please disregard Miss O and my dark circles hahah.

I don't know that I would do this again lol - BUT these 3 brides were well worth the sweat. I am so honored to have been a part of their weddings. They were not only beautiful on the outside, but illuminated true beauty on the inside as well. Thank you Jenny, Marianne & Diane for being such amazing people. Wishing you only happiness and love for the rest of your lives!!

This past weekend, I travelled to Cambridge to the beautiful Langdon Hall Hotel for Theresa's wedding. First of all, the room was amazing - the shower alone was almost the size of my room! lol...ok, well maybe not that big - but you know what I'm saying. Theresa was calm and collected as usual and of all brides, she tops the originality category. Her dress was unlike any other I've seen before, ripped right out of the pages Hollywood glam - click here to see her Cameron Diaz wedding gown! It was stunning. Her bridesmaids Lily & Trang were super fun to work with as well and it really did make the overall experience truly memorable. Theresa opted for a Jekyll & Hyde, having her hair down in vintage waves for photos and swept it up in an Old Hollywood updo for the ceremony and reception. While it pains me to tell you I didn't take photos - Theresa will be sending me some later!!

My good friends Andrew & Janet drove up as well to keep me company and also to capture the beauty of this amazing venue. It was a HOT day, but tons of fun :) Thank you friends for coming! We spent the afternoon eating at a swanky restaurant where we were clearly the youngest and of course, snapping photos.

Sunday, I met up with Cheryl - a friend of Julie's who I was unfortunately unable to do hair for. Luckily she had a second reception on the Sunday and was nice enough to call me up :) She opted for a Statue of Liberty with soft, flowing curls - accessorized with a crystal headband...sheer class!

All in all - great weekend!! Now, I'm prepping for my TRIPLE HEADER weekend. *cue the dramatic music. And yes, I am afraid. :P

Wedding Extravaganza : Congrats Gen & Dina!

Well they don't call it a long weekend for no reason! Usually having a wedding Saturday and Sunday is a piece of cake - but having attended Gen's wedding and being up for 21 hours with no nap and sleeping 4 hours before Dina's wedding - I was EXHAUSTED! It was inevitable I was going to feel it and that I definitely did. I started getting the chills Sunday afternoon but I popped in 2 Advils and it seemed I was perfectly fine - that was until 4am the next morning when they came back in full force making it difficult to walk or pull myself up. I downed a cup of NeoCitron and woke up 2 hours later drenched from a fever which I broke, but still a lot of muscle aches. All in all, I'm still trying to get better - but I got to say, it was an awesome weekend LOL.

Gen & I attend the same church - so it was nice not only to be a part of her wedding, I also attended it. The last two months have been difficult with her father suffering multiple strokes, but she has been so strong in her faith and maintain such an amazing outlook. Gen did not only have 1, not 2, but 5 hair changes...1 which I threw in lol. Though I do not have photos of them all (hopefully I can get off Glendon later on) - below was her first do of the day.

Sunday I had the chance to take part in Dina's wedding who was referred to me from a previous bride and friend, Pei. I have to say - from the moment I met Dina, I could tell it would be a calm wedding day and sure enough it was. Her relaxed personality combined with her "take it as it comes" attitude made for it super easy for me to do my job. It was extra special because I had to chance to work with the always talented makeup artist, Vanessa and the one and only Joee Wong. For Dina's wedding do, we did a Hybrid. For the ceremony she had her hair swept up in a full updo, and with a few tricks up my sleeve, I was able to construct the style so that Pei would be able to take the bottom portion down later on at the reception to reveal a romantic Halfie.

Both weddings were fun to be a part of and I only wish them both a lifetime of happiness!!

Jessica and I instantly connected when we first met for our consultation and trial. She is the kind of girl who just goes with the flow and enjoys life for what it is - and it's this kind of attitude that makes for the best "working" conditions on the BIG day!

The day started around 4:30am (please keep in mind, I always get up an hour before I have to leave the house because I'm not the kind of guy who can just roll out and ready to work! I need my downtime before...uptime? lol) but I officially started at 6am.

I met Jess' sister, Cheryl, who is getting married next month - unfortunately I was already booked up for her day :( She, along with their other sister, Donna were super nice so everything was easy- peasy. I also had the chance to hang out with VANESSA, makeup artist and friend :) That was a bonus! We always have a good time working together.

Style Breakdown:

Bride = a classic Sydney Opera house, weaving hair together to create a smooth chignon shape. The hair was constructed so that the bottom half could later on be taken out for a halfie.

Bridesmaids = a mix of the Leaning Tower of Pisa x 2, 1 Sydney Opera House and 1 Taj Mahal!

Last Thursday, Kelly & I had the opportunity to volunteer our services for Providence Healthcare's annual "Cuisine & Cuvee" event at On The Park Events & Conference Centre. Thanks to Cindy of Platinum Events, for getting me in touch with the foundation! She and her team did an amazing job coordinating and styling the venue!!

Nellie, Special Events Coordinator sent me this little message:

"We love you Justin! You did such an amazing job and everyone looked gorgeous! THANK YOU for donating your time."

Thanks to the foundations team for being such a riot to work with - they were HIGHlarious. Kelly & I had a great time just seeing what goes on at these kinds of events and I gotta say, it was pretty darn cool!

They say rain is good luck on your wedding and by the looks of the weather from yesterday, Julie & Ricky will have it eternally! lol.

Julie is one of those brides I will remember - she and I not only kept in contact throughout her entire wedding process, there was just has a really good positive vibe to her :) So even though it was pouring and borderline tornado weather, she kept her spirits high and remained pretty damn calm throughout it all. Fun bridal party fo sho!

It was also a special wedding because I got to see Jessica for the 3rd time!! LOL...that's never happened in the entire Puzzle Creations history. Good thing she's already married because you know how the saying goes "three times a bridesmaid, never a bride!" I was also shocked to find out she is expecting!! Congrats!!!!

It was definitely an early morning and though it was raining outside, the laughter inside took over. I met Pam last year when she was a bridesmaid at Amy's wedding - and we instantly connected! We had a great time during our trial and it was no different on her big day :)

To make the day that much better, I had my side-kick and best friend of 18 years, Crystal come to the rescue (there were 10 people!!), along with a very familiar face - one of my favorite makeup artists and friend - Vanessa. What many of you don't know is that Vanessa and I met through Joee who shot V's wedding. Ever since then - we see each other more than we see Joee lol. Vanessa was also a model for me for my lookbook! (picture below).

The really funny thing was we were right on schedule, a bit early actually - and we kept laughing at how slowly time was passing. We spoke too soon - by the last half hour - we were scrambling to finish and do touch-up's - but Pam's bridal party was easy going and that made the job much easier!

For Pam's bridal do, we stuffed two socks (yes, that's right two socks) underneath the backcombed hair to make it sturdy, It was smoothed out and the ends were wrapped up. We used a few extentions to create a low, smooth knot for drama. Bigger the better she said - but I modified it to make it more bridal. lol.

All-in-all a good morning! Congrats Pam!!! You looked stunning!

It's not often that I have nothing to say, so when a bride called me up to let me know about her illness - I was pretty devastated. The only thing that I could say was "I'm so sorry - I'm so sorry." In a time where most women are excited planning their wedding, something like this changes everything.

This may prove to be one of the significant weddings I will ever be a part of and it is my mission to make sure the experience for her is nothing less than amazing :)

It's been a while since I had to wake up at 4am - so it was definitely a challenge getting up. Not only was it still pitch black, it was raining and I was exhausted. I've been battling a cold, but thank goodness Timmies is open 24 hrs to get the ball rolling!!

While it may have been one of the most quiet environments, it was also very calming - soothing actually. However, it didn't last long as Mandy's relatives started to wake up one-by-one and then her entire family marching in towards the end lol. In any case, everyone was a pleasure to work with and they all looked stunning.

I drove down for her touch-ups in the evening and after seeing their venue -the Atlantis , I decided that is pretty much where I'd like to get married as well. It was an amazing view and definitely not your typical Asian banquet! I also bumped into Cindy, a makeup artist I have worked with on many weddings. It was so good to see a familiar face! She and I will be teaming up for Theresa's wedding in May :)

All in all, it was a great day! Mandy had a sophisticated low bun style (below), which was accented by two crystal hair pins, while her entourage opted for flowy half-up's and side ponies.

Besides the obvious scent of hairspray, there is just something in the air that screams "WEDDING SEASON." Whether it's the pollen or the smell of fresh coffee brewing at every bride's house, it's a special time for many.

I've got my gear and ready to tackle the world, a world where most (if any) man fear crossing. While I have been lucky to have the most awesome brides, I also have my fair share of horrific experiences, so my gaurd is definitely up.

Sorry I've been MIA - but things just kind of got out of hand these past few months! In any case, I will do my best to update more often - yes, I said that before, but I will seriously try (again) this time around.

As some of you know, we're just in the midst of planning our first big event in September and things are coming along nicely. Wedding season is just around the corner and I have been really blessed this year. While it pains me to turn away brides, it's been such an amazing journey to be at this point where I wish I had a twin. I am just thankful that people trust me enough to tell others about my work. What's in a name?

As I was checking my emails this past week, I noticed a few brides started their email with: "Hi There" or "Hello," but never is my name mentioned. At first, it felt a little impersonal and for whatever reason, it irked me. So it got me thinking, the only time I would ever start an email or any letter with a "Hi" or "Hi There," is when I don't know that person's name or not totally sure who to address it to. Then the lightbulb above my head lit up, if you go to my website, I use both Ming and Justin, never specifying what I actually go by. Honestly, if I saw Ming Justin Cheung on someone's website, I probably wouldn't know what name to use either. I mean, Justin is clearly an english name...and yet it's used in the middle - but if someone was just trying to incorporate their Chinese name, why would it be placed first? Would it be too personal to use someone's Chinese name when there is english one to choose from?

So let's settle this Ming vs. Justin name debaucle. I go by both and this is why: My entire immediate family all have an english name....quite western ones at that and yet, I am the only one who has a full out Chinese name. Time and time again, when I'm on the phone or telling someone my name in a noisy environment or a perfectly quiet place, all they hear is "Me," "Min," (I HATE Min) or respond with "Sorry, what was that?" The worst is the blank stare and nod.

It was pretty annoying and so in highschool, my friends took it into their hands to give me an english name. I thought...well why not Mike, it's close to Ming... which was immediately vitoed. Then there was Shawn, Chris and Brian. Long story short, Justin was chosen. I ONLY used Justin previously when I was meeting new people or didn't feel comfortable giving my name out to vendors etc. Now I use it to apply for jobs and pretty much in any instance when I'm not with people who already know me.

So yes, you can call me by either name and I'll respond. The end.

If I got a nickel for everytime someone asked me whether I have encountered Bridezillas, I'd be rich!

The truth is - I have been extremely lucky to have only dealt with 3 Bridezillas EVER - but that's not to say I haven't had picky Brides. Sometimes I want to scratch my eyes out.

Having done this for a few years now, I've learned a few things about being in this industry. This is just another job (for the most part). I'm all about creating good rapport with people because I find I do a much better job when the relationship is there and there is a mutual respect. Although hair is apparently a 'major' thing for brides, it seems as though the minute it's done with and to their satisfaction - they move on, sometimes forgetting to even send a quick thankyou afterwards or worse yet, they totally pretend they don't know you when you see them. Then, there are those brides who will shout at the top of their lungs for you, testifying to your skills.

It's funny because when Brides do the latter, I get all embarassed - and when they don't, it bothers me lol. Honestly, it doesn't matter either way because in the end, I was hired to do a job and whether that relationship flourishes afterwards or not, I can't take it personally. My job is very different than, say a photographer who gets to know the couple for a long period of time. I have been blessed to have so many Brides recommend me to their friends and those who send me an email to check up on how business is doing. All in all, it still amazes me that I'm still doing this :)

So what am I really saying? Nothing really lol - all just an observation of how people perceive what I do!

Stuff that ROCKS!

With winter just around the corner, a lot of girls tell me their hair becomes dry, coarse and unmanageble. On top of that, they continue to color, straighten, and curl - all things which strip your hair of natural oils that help to keep hair healthy. Hair(especially the ends) becomes dry, broken and frizzy.

Well, here is something I highly recommend: Moroccan Oil! As a leave in treatment, Moroccan Oil helps to seal your hair from heated tools and overall environmental stress. Because it is an oil, it's a little more dense and conditions your hair on a much deeper level, giving you the feeling of healthy and shinier hair. With that said, only put about a dime size (depending on thickness and length of hair) and work it in from midshaft down after shampooing and conditioning. A little trick I tell people is to blow the hair about 70% dry, then work the product in. You can also put just a little on the ends before straightening or curling to keep the fuzzies down. Though Moroccan Oil has an entire line of hair care products, this is a great starter for all your skeptics. A small bottle will cost you about $14.00, while the larger like in the photo is about $40.00.

This is great for those especially with thick hair, straight or curly. For those with finer hair, just be mindful of the amount you put in. I do not recommend putting this at the roots or on the scalp since it is quite thick. I have worked with this product on many clients and those who have used it for months, and it makes a HUGE difference in the texture and look of their hair. Let me know if you have any questions!

It's here! It's here! It's been a loooonnnnng time coming, but my site is finally up and running thanks to my good friend, Andrew! lol. So much has happened in the past year and I'm so relieved to be back on track. As you may have noticed, my blog also had a mini facelift. ;)

As wedding season slowly simmers down, I can't help but laugh (and sometimes wanting to cry) because I actually tried to CAP my weddings at 18 this year, however, I STILL managed to somehow take on 26! LOL. God is good! Puzzle Creations is going into its 5th year - so I would like to make a little toast:

To all my previous, current and future brides, THANK YOU for letting me be a part of your big day! Being one of the few people who get to see you before walking down the aisle is all the reward I need. Do it Up! is my first real hair workshop, which is taking place March 7th, 2009. After being asked a few times to start one, I figured, why not! The intention for this class is to help girls learn how to do their own hair for all those weddings and special events without. Haha, obviously I can't share all my tricks, but there are some really "do-it-yourself" styles that are effortless (once you get the hang of it) and won't require you to spend a fortune or better yet, huge chunks of time.

A lot of times, people tell me this is a gift from God and I do in fact believe that. So, half the proceeds of this event will go to "The Corsage Project," a non-profit charity that helps underpriveleged girls across the GTA attend their prom.

The cost is only $35 - which includes a starter set, small gift, light refreshments and of course, super important tips on doing your own hair. If you know anyone who is interested or would like to volunteer, hit me up and I'll give you more details!

As 2009 begins, I am starting to take my hair business a little more seriously - which means finally collecting years of photos from previous weddings for my portfolio. And since I'm challenged when it comes to developing web pages, it only made sense to do the next best thing - start a Facebook group haha! I also realized I haven't been keeping up with this blog, and now that things are starting up again, I really have to make this work. Believe me, doing hair is pretty interesting...the people you meet, the things they say and do :S Anyway, come on back, I promise I'll make it worth while.

In other news...congrats to Allison! She was my first wedding of the year and though it was bloody cold, the sun was out and the snow held back - so really, I can't complain not having to wake up an extra hour early to shovel...phew.

It shocks me everytime I write the date or look at the calendar and it's August. I honestly don't know where the Summer went - but I am glad I've made it this far without having a huge meltdown yet.

The chaos begins this Friday with D & R's controversial wedding (lol...fun times :D) - wake up call at 4am, which isn't so bad now because it's pretty standard for a Saturday morning. The week after is the much anticipated (& also controversial) wedding of my good friends V & S's - believe it or not, I actually don't have to do hair! And yet, I still have to get up at 6am...what the?! The week AFTER that is L & J's extravaganza, which is really exciting too, so yes, that makes 3 consecutive weddings back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back!! Throw in a few rehersal dinners, vocal lessons, work and babysitting...and I am almost certain September is going to slap me right in the face without me even knowing it!

I have just a handful of weddings left for this year and thank God for helping get through all of them. I will start doing my weekly tips again, so be on the look out...I promise once September comes, the hair guy will be doing some much needed revamping.

Congratulations JULY Brides: Tina, Lan and Nicole! Man, July has been a crazy month and it's only going to get crazier going into August! I am reuniting with Jaqueline tomorrow, a previous bride of mine to do hair for her brother's wedding. She and her mom are super nice people, so I am excited to see them again :)

On another note, I just had a bride e-mail me today about her wedding on August 30th of this year. This can only mean she is either really laid back about her hair otherwise she would have booked much earlier OR someone cancelled on her and got referred to me. The thing is, I am free...question is whether I should make it 25 weddings this year. lol...I think I need a break from smelling hairspray. Regardless, I should tell her sooner than later!

Lastly - for all those that read this and are thinking of referring your friends to me who are getting married in 2009, my prices have gone up slightly to counter a million weddings again next year haha. Prices are as follows:

Bride - $70.00
Bridesmaids - $45-50.00
Mother of the Bride/Groom - $45.00

I had to wake up at 3:30am this past Saturday and though it isn't anyone's ideal time to get up on a weekend, having such an easy going bride made a world of a difference. It was a long day packed with non-stop events, yet the whole day was humbling and went on without a hitch. I can't remember the last time I felt so appreciated from a bride and it was really encouraging and a good reminder why I do what I do.

After *much* anticipation - the wedding season has arrived and like my fellow colleagues in the industry, it's time to prepare. I orignially capped my weddings to 18, but the official number is 20. I'm not exactly sure how I am going to manage just yet lol...but thank goodness for amazing friends who are willing to get up at the crack of dawn to help me out! Tip of the Week - Finding the Right Stuff

Having done hair for almost 4 years - I've learned a few things or two. I have a good idea of what products suck and what rocks - more importantly, it's stuff that everyday people can afford.

For your hair spray needs - go with TREsemme. If you want the hold without the stiffness - go with the "Ultra Fine Mist" hold, this stuff works well! Unlike other "flexible" hairspray's, I find this one light and just enough to hold a curl. For more difficult hair, use their "Extra Hold." Also, you might want to invest in their thermal protector as well - believe it or not, it does do something for your locks.

So there is one thing about my job that always makes me chuckle and that is, just how much a bride trusts me. It's instantaneously and never forced, it just sort of happens. Maybe it's because I'm a somewhat of a stranger or maybe getting hair done is therapeutic, but it's like the minute they sit down, they just start talking. I mean, more times than not, they start by asking me how I got started etc., but of course it's inevitable not to ask about the wedding and so they begin and the rest is history. I've asked a few brides what it is and surprisingly they give me a smiliar answer: it's because it's easier to confront an issue wtih someone with no emotional attachement or involvement, than say, your bridesmaid or family member who you don't want to hurt. Being an unbiased thrid party, I suppose my advice or feedback weighs more than someone they've known for years. Huh...who would have thunk eh?

Tip of the Week - Owning your Perfect Face

If you have an oval shaped face, take advantage of it! It's the only face shape that can pull off pretty much any hair style you can imagine. Because of the symmetry of your face, any cut, short or long, up or down is balanced. So, my advice to you, go crazy and be a little creative or daring at your next cut because chances are, you're going to look pretty damn hot anyway.

As for brides with an oval face - the sky is your limit finding the right look, so try anything and everything, it'll surprise you what styles you can pull off.

Where's the love?

For all you pop culture junkies, this post is for you.

I am addicted to "America's Best Dance Crew," but after last weeks episode, I'm not so sure I have faith in the competition anymore. I was highly dissapointed, to say the least, with last week's elimination. Explain to me how Status Quo made it into the finals and Kaba Modern didn't? As frustrated as I was with that - what bothered me more was the fact that the last group with girls in it failed to make it to the season's finale. So why does this bother me?

The judges commented and congratulated the team on several occasions for being the last group with 3 standing females in the competition. The more I thought about it, it made me realize that's pretty significant considering all the other girl groups were eliminated. This is what gets me - the competition is once again male dominated BUT what pisses me off more is that the group who made it in didn't even deserve it! I don't think 'booing' is a sign of success, which is exactly what happened when Status Quo was the first to be told they made it to the finale. GIRLS - where's the love? This was a great opportunity for women everywhere to be proud and support the accomplishment of these 3 girls in the competition and yet, somehow America (at the very last minute) decided the less qualified group was better. For all your fellow addicts, I don't think I need to remind you that Kaba has never been in the bottom two (right? lol)... doesn't that say something?? Status Quo is entertaining to watch, but after seeing them duke it out with Jabbawockeez for the title, they got NOTHING on them. There is no finale because we all know who's going to win based off of that performance. WHAT KIND OF COMPETITION IS THAT? It was all tease, at least that's how I feel. You lead the group up just to take them down. I'm not saying this has anything to do with the sexes in the group - but it just doesn't make any sense to me that a group that has never dissapointed managed to get kicked off before the finale. I can't help but feel what a realistic perpsective this is of the American society - it's like they were saying "Yeah, it's time we gave women a shot .... mm, actually no it's not." Sorry Hillary, I don't think it's your time yet...

If it came down to Kaba and Jabba - perhaps there would be a little more excitement and suspense...right now, I'm just looking forward to the next season.

Tip of the Week - "Faux Hawk, Faux Pas"

Clearly I stole that clever saying somewhere - but the matter of the fact is, not everyone can pull off the hawk! If you have a wider face, you don't want to draw attention to the skinny peak up on top. An alternative style if you really want that look is to grow the middle section and the hair around longer than a normal "faux hawk" cut. Each side of the hawk can be short, just not as dramatic. This way the hawk aspect isn't so dominating, rather more subtle and gradual. I suppose that makes it a "Faux, FAUX, hawk?" Try asking your stylist for one next time, see how they react lol.

Puzzle Creations is giving back to the community!

Starting Spring/Summer 2008, I will be selling buttons (like the one below) to raise money for different non-profit organizations in Toronto. The "Piece Campaign" is about building a better community and knowing that we each play an important piece of the puzzle. Most of you know I currently work for a charity called "The Centre for Dreams," a day program for adults with developmental disabilities. After having worked here for almost 2 years, I have a better understanding of the challenges that NP organizations endure and it's difficult to just sit back and not doing anything.

2007 was a difficult year for a lot of people I know (including myself) and watching the news, for many others as well. As much as I'd like to save the world, I've realized that it begins by saving myself - and by that I mean finding "inner peace," being able to tear myself from the pressures of society and being someone I want to be. This campaign isn't just about helping others, but a way to help yourself.

I hope you will join me in this simple campaign and show your support by purchasing one and getting your friends involved too! They'll be $3.00 each.

We are in the midst of planning a mini fundraiser/kick-off in June with some live music, raffle prizes and a small art gallery. Details TBA! Just in case you wanted to know, proceeds will go to: METRAC, NEDIC, Arts for Children of Toronto, The Centre for Dreams and WPC. Yes, there's a lot, but you can donate specifically to any of the causes. The goal is raise $2500.00 with $500.00 going to each charity!

Tip of the Week - Fine and Limpy Hair

For those of you who have flat and lifeless hair, stop going straight for hair products with "VOLUME" written all over it. Instead, try using a hair thickening serum to give you a little boost. Apply it on towel-dried hair from root to tip and blow dry as usual. What this does is make each strand of hair thicker, which in turn gives you fuller hair. so...

Flat Hair + Hair Thickening Serum = More hair = Volume

My product of recommendation: Samy Fat Hair Serum - this is his "0" Calorie line, meaning it won't weigh your hair down. GOOD FOR BOTH MEN & WOMEN. I've tried it and it seems to work quite well. Test it out and let me know what you think!

Trends for 2008 Brides: Hair Accessories

For all you Brides-to-be, be creative this year when it comes to your hair and don't be left behind. Whether you want to look sophisticated, glam, elegant or trendy - a little "somethin', somethin'" goes a long way. Heck, feathers can even work for a person who can pull it off.

Tip #1: It's your WEDDING, you're not running for Prom Queen or Miss. America!!

Princess tiara's are out, instead choose a simple head band encrusted with crystals for a touch of class OR for something less "blingy" and more modern, use a satin hair band (either single or double strand). If you're feeling earthy, use a thin rope to create drama. Bands are good for ALL brides.

Tip #2: Be unconventionally traditional.

Put a contemporary twist on your veil and go for a sleek look with a French Veil - perfect for a fitted wedding gown. That'll make a statement without looking like you tried too hard. Scrap the long train in place of a Cathedral Veil - which is the perfect balance to a ball gown or mermaid style dress.

Tip #3: A little goes a long way.

If all you want is a little sparkle or a touch of class - try a crystal comb, a few hairpins or a simple flower, adding life to any style you decide. The "rules" of hair have gone a long way - so don't be afraid to experiment. You might want to consider having your hair accessories for your trial, which will give your stylist a chance to do something with it and determining where it would be best to place it.

Just a quick word of advice, DO NOT bring your whole entourage to the trial. If you have an idea of what you want, discuss it with your stylist and bring your MOH or someone you know will be honest with you. You won't be able to please everyone because they all have their own vision for you. Too many opinions may leave you confused and frustrated. Find what's right for you.

The thing about hair...

I am often asked, "where did you learn to do hair?" and the honest truth is - there is no real answer. I didn't go to school for it, but for whatever reason, it just all sort of happened and I have never looked back since. I have always been attached to my own hair and from the moment I knew what gel was and how to use it, it became a part of me. I suppose I should have known I had some sort of skill when I used to cut my own hair with scissors, clippers and a handheld mirror.

Think of it this way - your hair says a lot about you: who you are, how you're feeling, where you are in life and how you see yourself. The way you cut and style it can change the shape of your face, take a few years off and even make you look 10 pounds less. Doesn't that say something? They say clothes make a person, but I disagree. People notice your face first and then move their eyes down and the simple truth is - as ugly some clothes may be, people will be more forgiving because you took a chance and you can *always* go back to your regular clothes the next day. BUT there is no hiding an UGLY haircut or one that's been cut badly - it stays with you till it grows out. No product will help. It's the first thing you'll see every morning - which is no way to start the day off.

When you care about yourself - it'll show in your cut. Cheaper ISN'T always better.

Welcome one, welcome all - thanks for dropping by!

This blog was intended to follow me and my curling iron through the chaos of what is supposed to be the happiest day in every girl's life: their wedding. But let me just say this, if there is ever a more stressful day, it's a woman's wedding; when tensions are running high and emotions spewing everywhere. She may be breath-taking when she walks down the aisle, but there is nothing pretty about what happens before that! There is no hairspray strong enough to hold a person's tongue or a tight enough bobby pin to get the grip of a bunch of girls who are sleep deprived and in demand. Lucky me, I get to see it all.

The wedding count is up to 15 (15!!) this year - so multiple that by 4 worried bridesmaids, 1 stressed out bride, a crazy mom and a multitude of relatives who are in the way - and what you get is a priceless look into the reality of what it takes to get everything ready before the quartet starts the music.

So stick around for tips, ideas and trends for those days when you wanna add an "oomph" to your otherwise, boring flat hair. More important, stay for the stories and new things I learn about women everyday. Remember, this blog is about more than just hair. What I see is like something straight from the Discovery Channel - like animals ( I said LIKE, not that you women are!!), I may never fully understand why women do the things they do, but doing hair in the morning gives me a slightly better idea.

AND if nothing more, you'll get a chuckle or two - which will make a world of a difference when you're supposed to be busy working at your job. You might want to check behind you, I think your boss is watching you.

(p.s. with regards to my comment about women being like aniamls - all i meant was the way you work (when you have a stressful and sometimes shouting bride) together is unbelievable ... it was an innocent comment! lol - don't start the hate mail yet)
